How to Make Tallow!
If you don’t know about tallow then you are really missing out! For something that some could easily discard, it serves to be so useful! First, what is tallow? Tallow is a rendered form of beef or mutton suet. Suet is the hard fat found around the loins and kidneys. Now, there is some debate on whether all beef fat is under the umbrella of “tallow” with the suet just being the best quality, or if it’s not considered tallow. For the sake of this article, you can follow these steps with any form of beef fat, just know that the quality of your product will differ depending on what you use.
Tallow uses:
So why should we go through the trouble of making tallow? Well, it has so many uses! Most commonly, you can use tallow like you would butter, or oil. It’s perfect to put in the bottom of a pan for example, due to its high smoke point of 420 degrees Fahrenheit. ( Butter is 350) You can also use it to deep fry recipes, and it makes an amazing body lotion! Yes, you read that last one right! It’s truly one of the best ingredients for your skin!
Steps! :
- First, you want to cut your fat from the meat and cut it into inch squares. Then you want to put it into a Dutch oven or roasting pan.
- Put your oven at 220 degrees Fahrenheit, and put your fat in the oven. You’re going to want to check on it a couple of times, but in total, it should take 5-8 hours in the oven.
- When done, strain the liquid from the chunks.
- Pour into your container of choice and you’re done! It stores at room temperature for about a year, longer in the fridge, and of course, it can be frozen as well!
And that’s all there is to it! It’s a long process but very hands-off. Just think about how much you can do using something that too often nowadays gets overlooked as a byproduct.
